Artist Statement
In 1978, my journey led me to California intending to broaden my horizons for just one year. However, the Bay Area quickly became a cherished home where I’ve lived for over forty years. Now, my life and that of my three children are deeply woven into the vibrant tapestry of the Bay Area. Despite being anchored here, my core inspiration still stems from Japan, particularly its profound respect for nature, embodying Toko Shinoda’s belief that Japanese culture involves being one with nature.
The tactile experience of working with diverse materials has always been exhilarating. My artistic ventures have seen me manipulate glass, wood, fibers, and tiles, among other media, seeking harmony with their inherent characters. The materials partly lead the process, resulting in a dialogue between me and their natural inclinations. My recent fiber work is particularly reflective of this philosophy, each piece a testament to a process that is both exploratory and reverent. I honor each element’s individuality, guiding them into a cohesive whole without forcing unity.
Contemplation of each material’s story enriches the creative process.
I aspire to make new memories that resonate with those who encounter my art.
